Match Report: Goals galore as FC triumph at Millerntor

Despite facing a two-nil deficit midway through the first half, 1. FC Köln responded magnificently to earn a 3:5 win against FC St. Pauli. Simon Terodde grabbed a brace as he broke Dieter Müller’s record of eight goals in three competitive games for the Billy Goats.

FC made two changes from their win over Ergzbirge Aue on Matchday 3, as Sehrou Guirassy and Lasse Sobiech came into Markus Anfang’s starting line-up in place of Vincent Koziello and Jorge Meré. As for Markus Kauczinski and the hosts, they also made a double change after their heavy 4:1 loss against 1. FC Union Berlin. Luca-Milan Zander replaced Bernd Nehrig, allowing Jeremy Dudziak to move into midfield, and Henk Veerman’s goal earned him a spot up front in place of Dimitrios Diamantakos.

Köln began the stronger of the two sides and went in search of an early opener, yet some dogged defending was enough to keep out the lively Louis Schaub and Christian Clemens. Despite the visitors’ efforts, they were dealt a blow when Veerman grabbed his second goal in brown-white. A mistake from Marcel Risse allowed the Dutchman to race onto his backpass and slot home.

Rotten start sees Köln rally back

The Millerntor suitably rose to the occasion and FC were visibly rattled. Sankt Pauli continued to power forward and found a second in the 25th minute. Christopher Buchtmann made a break down the left and, despite being slightly offside, managed to nip in behind the Köln defence and Jeremy Dudziak nodded home to heap more misery on the travelling league leaders.

Nevertheless, aside from Horn’s vital stop to deny Luca-Milan Zander, Köln came markedly back into the game after that goal. Their pressure paid dividends and Schaub’s cross to Clemens was perfect for a glancing effort, and the winger happily obliged with a fine flick to bring his side back into the game before the break.

Things got even better for Markus Anfang and Simon Terodde made his half-time team-talk that little bit easier by levelling the scores right on half-time. A super move began with some excellent work by Clemens and Dominick Drexler, with the latter teeing up the league’s leading goalscorer. Unsurprisingly, he made no mistake from close range.

Four more goals see Köln move clear

After the interval, Simon Terodde picked up where he left off. The imposing forward was played in by Drexler on the edge of the area and clipped by Robin Himmelmann on his way through on goal. Benjamin Cortus immediately pointed to the spot, and he scored his ninth goal in three games to break Dieter Müller’s record.

After turning around that two-goal deficit, FC could have been forgiven had they wanted to stabilise the game for a while and begin to build once more. That lasted all of four minutes. The visitors powered up the pitch and even though Himmelmann did brilliantly to deny Drexler, Schaub was able to square for Sehrou Guirassy to make it four.

The remainder of the game should have been easy going from there, yet Sankt Pauli would not say die. The two-goal cushion was wiped out within 10 minutes after Waldemar Sobota fed Buchtmann, and his deflected effort looped over the helpless Timo Horn.

The pressure was cranked up further as a result and Horn had to be at his very best to halt Marvin Knoll’s free-kick and further efforts from the hosts went narrowly off target. Wave after wave rained down on the FC goal, and Buchtmann should have added a second but for his close range effort to fly wildly over the crossbar.

It was a match that could have ended in favour of either side, but FC were much more clinical with their finishing and it told. The final kick of the game was decisive, as Salih Özcan latched onto a through ball from Louis Schaub before coming inside and firing into the bottom corner to score his first professional goal in a tussle that will live long in the memory.

After a pulsating game from start to finish, it is FC who sit top of the 2. Bundesliga table heading into the international break. Anfang’s men are four points clear of Sankt Pauli; they have lost their last two games, conceding nine goals in the process.
